Carrying Out an Experiment

We have been learning how to carry out an experiment. We were given 3 plants. We put one on the table in the sun. We put one on a table at the other side of the room from the windows. We put the third plant in the cupboard.

In Week 1 the plants looked like this...

Plant 1 Week 1 - by the window

Plant 2 Week 1 - in the cupboard

Plant 3 Week 1 - in the light but away from the window

By Week 3 this is what had happened...

Plant 1 Week 3 -  by the window

Plant 2 Week 3 -  in the cupboard

Plant 3 Week 3 - in the light but away from the window

We found out that the plant by the window grew the best as it got the most sun. The plant away from the windows but in the light grew well, but not as well as the plant sitting in the sun. The plant in the cupboard became very pale and most of the leaves died.

We discovered that plants need sunshine to stay alive. Plants make their food from the suns rays.

Focus Question
Why dance?

This Term the school is learning about dance.

Room 3 chose to learn about ballet first. We made up some questions and then we did some research to find the answers to our questions.

Who dances ballet? Ballerinas and male dancers
Where do you dance ballet? In a theatre
Why do you dance ballet? To tell a story
How do you learn to dance ballet? You go to a  ballet school.

We tried out the first 5 basic steps that a ballet student learns. It was fun.

Room 3's Assembly

Here we are on the stage ready to start assembly.

On Friday the 20th of June Room 3 took the Whole School Assembly. First we sang our Welcome Song:

Kia ora, Talofa, Maloeleilei,
Welcome to our assembly today.

Next we sang the National Anthem. We stood proudly and put our hands over our hearts.

Then we showed the school our Photostory of the jobs we do around the classroom.

Then Noah did his job. He asked Korban and Violet from Room 14 to help him read the news. Noah did a really good job.

Then we sang two songs. Our friends from Room 18 helped us to sing 'With a Little Help From My Friends'. Room 18 then sang 'Lean on Me' by themselves. Then we sang 'Johnny Be Goode' with the whole school. Thank you for your help Room 18.

It was then Angel's turn to do her job, She gave out the special Sports Awards to Sir Mr Timo, Dame Whaea Dagma and Dame Mrs. Key. She did a great job and it was very funny. Everyone laughed.

Next it was Shylay's turn to read her description of Whaea Barb. She read it very confidently. Then Whaea Barb gave out the Class Awards.

Finally we gave Levi the Teddy to Room 16 because they were the best behaved class at assembly.

It was then time to say goodbye. As the school left the hall we all danced to One Direction singing 'One Way or Another'.

We had an awesome time taking assembly. Mrs Robinson and Mrs Bharath were very proud of us.

Written English

Learning Intention: We are learning how to write our stories by ourselves.

Success Criteria: We will know we can do this when we can:-

  • write our name correctly
  • draw a clear picture for our plan
  • miss lines
  • leave finger spaces between words
  • copy words off our word cards
  • write some words and beginning letter sounds by ourselves
  • publish our work carefully and neatly

This Term we have been writing recounts about things that we have been doing at home and at school. We also learnt how to write a retell. As part of our Inquiry about the Treaty of Waitangi we learnt about the Maui stories. Our favourite was Maui and the Sun, so we wrote our retell about that story.

Here are three of our stories.

Inquiry Term 1 2014

Make Your Mark.

I make my promise, I keep my promise.

What makes a strong partnership?

This Term Room 3 learnt about the Treaty of Waitangi . We looked at videos of Waitangi Day celebrations and at photos that showed what the signing ceremony might have looked like.

We then made our own Class Treaty. A treaty is a promise and we all promised to keep our Class Treaty. To help us do this we designed our own flag and then had a ceremony where we signed our Class Treaty. We lay the Treaty on our class flag just like they lay the Treaty of Waitangi on the British flag. Then we all signed it.  Here are Bailey-Rae and Shylay signing our Class Treaty.

We also made a promise to come to school every day and we have been very good at keeping this promise.

We learnt that The Treaty of Waitangi is also about partnership. We made a promise to learn our school haka and our school song 'Pepeha'. These photos show us learning the haka. Our partners from the Senior School came every day for a week to help us learn the haka. They were very good teachers and we are very grateful that they helped us.  These photos show us practising the haka.

Learning the haka helped us learn that being a good partner is about working together.

Reading in Room 3

Our learning intention is to learn to read by ourselves.

We will know we can do this when we;

  • know our letter names

  • know our basic words off by heart
We need to practise reading our books and our words every day. Thank you parents, caregivers and brothers and sisters for helping your child with their reading.

We like reading in Room 3. Reading is fun and we learn lot

Here the Lilies are learning their letter names.

We do buddy reading every day after our group lesson with the teachers.

Introduction to Room 3 2014
