Self Portraits with Whaea Dagma.

In weeks three and four of Term 3 we created self portraits in a modern style, similar to Pablo Picasso. Our portrait shows our emotions. We had to show what we felt by using lines, shape and colour. We really enjoyed taking part in this art activity.

Here are some photographs of us at work.

First we did our plan.

Then Whaea Dagma photocopied our plan up to A3 size.

And then we added colour using pastels.

The Hail Storm

While we were learning about water we had a great day when it hailed twice. We were able to go outside and explore the hail. We were really cold,  but it was FUN! Here are some pictures of us out in the hail and some of the great stories were wrote about our hail experience.

Look at us out in the hail in our bare feet. Katriona is picking up some hail. It was very exciting.

Sela made a hail snowball.

Haniel wrote a great story about the fun she had in the hail.

Melino also wrote a most interesting story about looking at the hail and holding it.

Some Panmure Basin Trip Stories.

Hofoni had fun on the trip and he learnt a lot.

Daniel wrote a recount with lots of detail. Daniel noticed lots of things on the trip. He was looking and listening really well.

Serenity tried hard to write her  best recount ever and you did Serenity.

Our Trip to the Panmure Basin.

On Thursday the 30th of May Rooms 3, 5 and 19 went to visit the Panmure Basin to look at the Water Cycle.

When we got there we walked down the slope of the volcano. The Panmure Basin is a caldera.

Here we are having a rest after our long walk and having our photo taken.

We looked at the mangroves. The mangroves help keep the water healthy and clean.

Next we walked to the bridge and we looked at the fresh water stream and the salt water Basin. The stream runs into the Panmure Basin.

We saw ducks swimming in the salt water.

The water in the Basin is blue and white because the sky is reflected in it.

We saw a Pied Shag diving for fish.

There were lots of birds we had never seen before. Her are some Oyster Catchers with a seagull.

The bottom of the Basin is very muddy. There were bubbles coming out of the mud.

At the end we got to play on the playground. It was cool fun!

Here is a stick showing how far the tide went out while we were at the Basin.

It was a fantastic trip and we learnt lots about what happens at the collection points of water.

We are learning to play netball.

First we learnt how to do the chest pass. Dominick and Daniel are trying really hard to do an expert chest pass.

Next we learnt how to do the bounce pass. It wasn't easy but we did really well and we had fun.

Conserve, preserve, it's what we ALL deserve.
To keep the flow of H2O, what's our way to go?

This Term in Inquiry we are learning about water and the Water Cycle.

First we began by reading the Maori Creation Myth about Rangi and Papa and how their children pushed them apart. They cried so much for each other that they made all the water of the world.
We made a mural of the story of Rangi and Papa and showed how it supported what we had learnt about the Water Cycle. We think it looks great!

Next we looked at the 3 states of matter and found out that water can be a liquid, a solid (ice) and a gas (water vapour).

In these two photos we are discovering what makes water a liquid.
We found out that it is cold, wet and pours.

Then we carried out some experiments to find out how the Water Cycle works.

Melen and JJ are looking at the steam rising off a pot of boiling water. The water is evaporating. That means that it is turning into a gas and rising up into the air. Once the water vapour gets high enough it becomes cold and turn back into water (water droplets). This is consolidation. The water droplets form clouds and when the droplets become heavy enough they fall to the ground as rain.

In the second part of the experiment Serenity put a cold metal lid onto the pot. The lid worked the same as the cold air higher up in the atmosphere. The water vapour hit the cold metal and turned into water droplets. Some water droplets even got heavy enough to fall of the pot lid like rain falls from the clouds. We really enjoyed doing this experiment. It was fun!

AFL Kiwikick

We are learning how to play AFL Kiwikick. Last week we learnt to do the handball. We swung our arms and punched the ball to our partner. We loved doing the pirate dance. This week we learnt the high mark and chest mark pass. It was fun.

First we played a warm up game. It was fun.

Then we learned how to do handball. Moeaki was punching the ball to his partner. Well done Moeaki.

Dominick and Daniel are practising the chest pass.

Here is Lei catching the ball in a chest pass. He is pretty good don't you think?

Written English

In Story Writing we are learning how to write our own stotries by ourselves. We will know we can do this when we can:
  •  miss lines and leave finger spaces
  • use time words like 'first', 'next', 'then' and 'finally in our plans and our stories
  • say a sentence, remember it and write it
  • use the feeling chart to help us use better words in our feeling statement.
If you look at our stories you can see that we are getting better everytime we write a new story.

First we wrote about the Christmas Holidays. Lei had a fun time at his Grandma's house.

Next we wrote about what we did in the weekend. Daniel enjoyed playing with his little brother.

Melen had a walk with her family and some nice food. We all wish we had been with you Melen.

Then all the school went to the Life Education Caravan. We wrote about our visit. We used time words for the first time in this story . We used the words to help make the events in our recount happen in order.

Longford Street bus stop

Looking for information

The Pictograph.

Our mural to show safe and dangerous places.

Room 3 have been looking at ways to get SPS children onto the bus safely. First we went for a walk on the Mt. Wellington Highway and we looked at what was dangerous and what was safe. Next we did a survey with the bus travellers and made a pictograph about it. Then we made flags to show where the bus stops are and how many kids catch the bus at each stop. Next we made a mural to show the danger points and the safest places. Now we are looking at what changes we can suggest to make bus travel safer for our students.

Room 3 Introduction

Kia Ora

We are Room 3. We are a very special class because we have two teachers who take us for a half a day each. Mrs Bharath is the teacher for the first half of the day and she teaches us Maths and Reading. Mrs Robinson is the teacher for the second half of the day and she teaches us Writing and Inquiry.

We love learning and we always try to do our best.

Call in and come and say hello to us whenever you are around.
